I’ve just completed back-to-back tours in Costa Rica and Norway to kick off what will be a very busy 2022! The sheer number of images I expect to take this season will be staggering. I could easily end the year with over 100,000 photos to sort through. Despite the crazy number of files, there are always some that stand out in your mind at the conclusion of a tour which get edited first. This is one of those images.
The effect captured here is what Bob Ross would refer to as a ‘happy little accident’. While shooting high-speed flash images of hummingbirds there was a delay in the recycle time of the flash system and the results were stunning. We spent the next hour tweaking the setup and produced amazing results. I opted to try this technique on bats in flight as well, so later that night we utilized the same setup. The images of the bats were equally dramatic. I guess this could be called the ‘Now Tours effect’.
After editing these images I knew this method was something I wanted to offer future participants. Whether you’ve been there before, or have always wanted to visit this tropical paradise, you’ll have the ability to create images just like this one when you travel to Costa Rica with me. I’m now booking for my 2023 tour, if you’d like more info you’ll find it at this link.
Sometimes it’s the happy little accidents that produce the finest results.
Your thoughts and comments are always welcome.
